Here are some tips to get you started:

Make sure you have read the WHOLE book before you start your review.

Include a short summary of the book, but don't give away the good parts!

Include some background information on the author.  You can usually find a bio inside the front or back cover of the book.  You can also go online to find information.  Just remember to be accurate.  If you have any chance of interviewing the author - go for it - contact information may be in the book or online or someone who works with them with respond to you.

Mention what kind of book it is - fiction or nonfiction, a book with pictures and/or photographs or illustration, how many pages, etc.

Be specifice about whatyou like or don't like about the book.  Give examples like, "The author brings the streets of London to life with his vivid descriptions," or The author tries to be funny in some areas, but I didn't think some of it was in good taste.

Have a friend or family member read it over - edit - do they have any questions about the book that you didn't answer?  Add it to your review ...  re-read.  File in your Writing Portfolio with your editing sheet.  Thank you, Ms. Lane

    1. Took is a mystery about a brother and sister, Daniel and Erica, who move from suburban Connecticut to an abandoned farmhouse in rural West Virginia. When suddenly Daniel's sister Erica disappears into the mountains with her beloved look-alike doll. This seems similar to the disappearance of another seven-year old girl 50 years ago, should Daniel believe the rumors that his schoolmates are telling...I guess only time will tell.

  27. "Arf"
    Book Review by: Delani D.

I just read an amazing book called “Arf”. It is a two-hundred and ninety three page novel that was written by author Spencer Quinn. Spencer Quinn lives in Massachusetts with his two dogs Audrey and Pearl. This book stars Bowser and his wonderful human Birdie.

Birdie and Bowser, along with Mama and Grammy, live at 10 Gentilly Lane. Everyone knows that they have nothing worth stealing, so why did they have a break-in? Bowser, Birdie’s dog, is trying to find out how this happened and who is responsible. Birdie’s father was a policeman who was killed while working on a case. Is his death connected to the break-in? The most important question is, why is the whole town starting to smell like cat, lime aftershave, and even snake?

Arf is a fiction book full of mystery and suspense. You won’t want to put it down. I love how the author tries to add humor to the story with Snoozy and how he can’t stay awake. Bowser also adds humor when he constantly makes noises even though Birdie tells him to stay quiet. My favorite part of the story is the ending when everything is revealed. Overall, I think “Arf” is an amazing book that would appeal to people of all ages...especially people who enjoy a good mystery!

  28. The Adventures of Tintin
    By Holden T.
The book I chose was The Adventures of Tintin by Alex Irvine. It is an action adventure book with 227 pages. Alex Irvine created novels and comics about Marvel superheroes before he wrote this book. He is a good author because he has a lot of experience. I thought this book was interesting because even though it had no pictures, it was packed with action and was descriptive and specific.
The novel is about a detective who finds a model ship called The Unicorn in the city on display to buy. When Tintin saw the model ship, he wanted to know the history of the ship so he asked the villager for the model ships history. The villager said there were three ships called The Unicorn, and three models of them.
What the salesman didn’t know was that there was a scroll in each ship that made a map to the treasure hidden by the pirates of The Unicorn. Tintin didn’t know that until Snowy, his dog, knocked over the model ship in Tintin’s apartment. After Snowy knocked over the model ship, a small silver case fell out of the ship’s sail. When the silver case fell out, Tintin found a scroll that couldn’t be read until the other two scrolls were found to make the map. Then, Tintin and his dog Snowy leave to the library to get more information on the model ships.
When Tintin came back to his apartment, it was trashed inside. He thought another man who also wanted to buy the model ship came in and did it. Tintin thought the man took it because he knew about the scrolls and already had two of the model ships. If he would have found the scroll before Tintin did, he would have found the treasure first. When Tintin looked around, he found the model ship, but was knocked out. When he woke up, he saw the man that he met at the store. The man from the store lied to Tintin so he would leave and he would get the map.
The rest of the story is how he escapes from being captive and finds the treasure. He has to get away from danger by running away. He has valuable scrolls that lead to finding treasure so he fights hard to keep them. He outsmarts people by disguising himself, and by saying he is different things to trick them. Snowy the dog is with him throughout every part to help and protect him.

  30. Ranger in Time: Danger in Ancient Rome
    Author: Kate Messner
    Book Report by: Daniela D.

Ranger from the book “Ranger in Time: Danger in Ancient Rome” is a dog who lives with two
kids named Luke and Sadie. Ranger travels time through his old rusty first-aid kit, to a time and place
where someone needs help. When he has helped the person, he goes home. He tries to be a search
and rescue dog but he can’t stay focused. In this series of the Ranger in Time, Ranger travels to Ancient
Rome to help two people named Quintus and Marcus from the academy Ludus Magnus Gladiator
School, managed by Villius. Marcus is there and has been there for 5 years as a slave paying off his
father’s debt. He has been living there since his parents died in one of Ancient Rome’s many fires.
Quintus is there because he wants to be a gladiator.

They found Ranger in the amphitheater, today known as The Coliseum. To help Quintus become
a gladiator they went to the amphitheater to watch gladiators fight. They were in the tunnels to get to
the amphitheater when a man came up and asked Marcus, “Can you handle a lion”? Marcus said, “yes”.
Suddenly Marcus noticed Quintus was gone. Ranger went to find Quintus, when Ranger came back with
Quintus, the lion was attacking Marcus. So, Ranger scared him away. Then Marcus and Quintus
returned with Ranger to the Ludus Magnus Gladiator School. Villius, the school’s manager, asked,
“What is a dog doing here”? Marcus replied, “He was a stray”. Then Villius said, “His food allotment is
    coming out of yours”.

Many other things happened and Ranger helped many people. Then one day Quintus had to
fight in the amphitheater against Cleto, a tough fighter. The fight was brutal, Quintus lost his weapon
and suffered a wound. In the middle of the fight, Ranger helped Quintus by distracting Cleto, but in the
end the Emperor Domitian declared both men victorious. This was a relief because the loser would have
paid with his life. Quintus had his wounded arm wrapped with a piece of cloth. The emperor set down
the gifts for both gladiators which included palm leaves and wooden swords. Quintus also won his
freedom, and Marcus, although he knew he should be happy for his friend, shed tears holding
Ranger, when Emperor Domitian asked to see Marcus and Ranger. Marcus feared he would be
punished because Ranger had interrupted the fight. They were surprised when Domitian gave Ranger a
palm leaf and Marcus a wooden sword, much larger than the one he lost in the fire so many years ago.
The emperor also declared them victorious. Marcus did not understand as he was not a gladiator. “No,
you’re not”, said the emperor, “you gave the crowd something they love more than blood, you gave
them a story, one they will tell for a long time to come”.
Quitus and Marcus waited at the victorious gate, the gate to freedom, come Ranger, we are
free, you can come home with us. Ranger heard a loud humming noise which led him back to his old
rusty first-aid kit. It was time for Ranger to go home too, but not before one last scratch behind his ears
from Marcus and a palm leaf which he tucked under his collar.

  31. STING
    by heba.h

My book is Sting. The author is Jude Watson. My book is filled with 260 pages.Jude Watson was born in Brooklyn but slipped over the broader so she mostly grew up in Queens.

It was really slow at the beginning, and the author reused the whole "cursed gems" thing, but this time there was an actual ghost who haunted the stones and that was so unrealistic. But after the supernatural side of the story died down a little bit, it was a really fun read. Blue makes a return, along with another villain (okay, a group of villains) and kind of ruins the day for the Throwaway Gang.
To anyone who loved the book Loot, this is a must-read.

Sting is a great book and I really recommend it because it has a lot of action and adventure. I liked Sting because the characters really fit the situation they got into and they went on an amazing adventure. Some other reasons why I like this book is because this book was action pack .Jude Watson is one of my favorite authors.

  32. The book that I read was Demigods and Magicians. Percy and Annabeth Meet the Kanes. The author of the book is Rick Riordan. He wrote many books. He is 52 years old, he wrote the Percy Jackson book series. His books were translated into 41 different languages. Some of the books he wrote are, Lightning Thief, and The Titans Curse. The type of books he writes are fictions and mythologies.
In the book Demigods and Magicians there are 4 teenagers. Their names are Percy and Annabeth, these two are Demigods. The other two are Carter and Sadie, they are Magicians. The teenagers are immortal. They had many adventures and throughout the book they fought a crocodile, and they fought against each other. There is a bad guy in the book, his name is Setne. He tries to kill the teenagers while he follows a plan he made to become fully immortal. The teenagers combined their demigod and magician magic together to make a weapon to defeat the Setne. In the end Setna ended up wanting to be friends.
What I liked about the book is that there is no mortals. Also I liked that there are Greek and Egyptian monsters. One of the monsters is a half lion, half wolf head, it has two heads. One of the immortals, Percy is Poseidon's son and I think that is cool. Also there is a lot of Greek Egyptian spells. I like that the spells are turned into cool powers. One of the spells is call HA-DI, and the power is a explosive bomb. So that is what I like about the book.

  36. Part 1
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
    By Kaisha H.

I’m doing a report on Harry Potter, written by J. K. Rowling. J. K. Rowling was born in Yate, Britain on July 1965. She was a struggling single mom. She wrote this book in 1990 and with it becoming very popular reaching the top three spots in the New York Times, Best seller list. J. K. Rowling continued to write six more books in the Harry Potter series. All these books she had written made her the 13th richest woman in Britain, even richer then the queen. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was the first book she wrote in the Harry Potter series.
Harry Potter is a fiction book. Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone is a not a picture book. This is a story about Harry Potter, a wizard, and his two friends Ron and Hermione. He met them on the Hogwarts train, on their way to the Hogwarts school.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Part 2

At Hogwarts, they learned to control and use their magic. They also play games such as Quidditch. There are four teams for this game. Harry played on Gryffindor and they hadn’t won in seven years, until Harry Potter showed up.
Harry Potter and his friends, Ron and Hermione, like to go on adventures. The most dangerous one they went on was going through a trapdoor, with lots of obstacles, to get the Sorcerer’s Stone, before Voldemort did. Voldemort the evil wizard, wanted the Sorcerer’s stone so he could take over the world! Thankfully Harry and his friends got it first and saved the school!
I like this book because it was filled with adventure and magic. How the author wrote this book, with all the magic made me feel like I was right there with Harry Potter. I felt like I was experiencing all the magic happening. J. K. Rowling did an amazing job being so descriptive and helping my mind imagine this wonderful world of magic. So even though I was bribed to read this book, I really enjoyed it, and I can’t wait to read the other six books.

  38. “The Great Book”

    By: Briann G.

I read a book called “The Guardian Herd Windborn”. The book is about two pegasi, named Star and Nightwing. They both have powers. Star chooses to be the healer and use his powers for good. Nightwing is the destroyer and uses his powers for evil. Nightwing takes all the pegasi of Anok against their will. Star is trying to save the pegasi. Will Star save the pegasi of Anok or will he die trying?

Jennifer Lynn Alvarez is the author of the book. She went to UC Berkeley and got a degree in English literature. She was inspired to write all of her books by her love of animals. She lives with her husband, three kids, and their horses on a small ranch in Northern California. During her free time she rides her horse.

“The Guardian Herd Windborn” is a fiction book with no pictures. There are 340 pages and 38 chapters. I like that author describes the smallest things a lot in the book. I didn’t like that whenever I stopped it was at a really good part and I couldn’t read anymore. It has romance and is mysterious; you never know what is going to happen next. It has action and some sad and happy parts. If you like horses that fly, then this is your book.

  39. The Star Of Awsome
    By: shaylee s

So I read the book return of the jedi. The aurthor of the book is Tom Angleberger. I liked this book because I love star wars. I also liked the book because it was a fiction book. I also collet star wars books.

The book star wars is actually easier to understand then the movie. Well I do. I think that the chapters could be longer. I think that the words could be a little bigger. I wish that they could make the pictures colorful.

I think that the book could have more details. The words in the book could be less weird. I think that the aurthor could discribe Jabba and the Ewoks better. So that is what I think that the author could change.

I think this book was very cool. I saw that no words were spelled wrong but there were weird ones. The star wars book taught me some new words. I also stumbled upon some old words. I really thought that this book really should have in ratings a million stars.

I choose this star wars book because it has seventy-four chapters. I can't beleive that star wars is so famouse. Oh sorry I got disstracted. The star wars book has 413 pages. That is alot of pages. So i have to go so bye.

  40. God's Smuggler
    By: Michael E.

The God's Smuggler is about a man named Andrew van der bijl. He is a missionary and the founder of Open Doors. He smuggled bibles into some of the most dangerous place on planet Earth. This book is a two-hundred eighty eight true story, written by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill.

Los Angeles Times says God's Smuggler was a "Remarkable true document...more thrilling than a spy story."I liked how the author shows his thoughts. I also like how it ends but you'll have to find out yourself. I would rate this book five out of five stars.

Overall from what I read this was an amazing document. Bother Andrew has his own organization called Open Doors as I mentioned earlier. Andrew was born May 11, 1928. He lives in North Holland, Netherlands with his wife Corre van der bijl. For more information on Open Doors visit OpenDoorsUSA.org.
